Reading Your Water Meter

Introduction

Reading your water meter is a good way to know how much water you are using. Water is measured by units, where 1 unit = 100 gallons.

A water meter looks like a car's odometer. To read the meter, you generally drop the last 2 digits including the painted-on digit. After dropping the the last 2 digits, read the meter from left to right.

Reading the Meter

Last Month's Water Meter:

This meter reads 287 units of water.

This Month's Water Meter:

This meter reads 361 units of water.

Current month's reading - last month's reading = units consumed

361      -       287     =    74

The difference, or water consumed for the measuring period, is 74 units or 7,400 gallons.
